Owing to its transparency and durability, glass is one of the most important and challenging materials in the construction industry. Continuous innovation and development in manufacturing, finishing, engineering and architecture enable the use of an enormous variety of building glass products of all conceivable dimensions, geometrical shapes and aesthetic and functional qualities. However, the availability of raw materials and energy for glass production and processing is increasingly subject to restrictions. At the same time, there is no alternative to glass as a transparent, efficient building material. In this challenging environment, the German Association of Glass Construction and Design (FKG) is calling on engineering and architecture students to rethink how to optimally use glass as a transparent, functional and structural building skin as part of a competition.

 

As an example of this, the ruins of a gothic monastery church in Berlin are to be made usable for cultural events by means of a new transparent building closure. The glass roofing to be developed for the nave and the likewise new transparent south façade serve as a weather protection, while the historic building shall also be presented attractively and perceptibly to the outside via the glass envelope. Competition participants shall invent and design solutions where glass is optimally and creatively used and where the limits of what is feasible are explored and extended with the future in mind.

 

Work period / design development: One term (6 months)

Latest submission date: July 31, 2025

Jury meeting, decision by: September 30, 2025

The participants will be informed of the results via e-mail

Award ceremony: October 2025

 

The prizes to be awarded are:

• 1st prize: 1.500,- EUR

• 2nd prize: 1.000,- EUR

• 3rd prize: 500,- EUR

• In addition, one (1) special prize of EUR 500 can be awarded.
