Dubai is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world and an example of great human ingenuity. It is proof of how a seemingly harsh environment can be transformed into a city inhabited by more than 3 million residents. It is an attraction point for investment, businesses, and tourism.

 

The history of the small port to the Persian Gulf has been dwarfed by new developments in modern high-rise architecture based on glass, steel, and concrete. With many world-record-breaking developments, it has gained great notoriety within pop culture, being featured in many Hollywood

blockbusters, and has a magnificent ability to bring visitors from all parts of the globe.

 

Today, the city is known for the luxurious lifestyle it offers, as well as being one of the safest places in the world, where crime is almost non-existent. It has gained its reputation through architectural developments such as the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, The Atlantis Hotel, The Palm, and Dubai Mall, and more recent developments such as the Dubai Frame, Museum of the Future, and Expo 2020.

The great developments in the United Arab Emirates that have influenced the booming of architecture have been fuelled directly by the discovery of fossil fuels, followed by trade on the global market. These factors have allowed it to become the great city it is today, while also continuing to thrive and still be ambitious for further world records, attractions, and developments. Currently, the direction of the city is to detach from this economic model and seek transformation into a sustainable place with its own identity.

 

How would Dubai look and function in the future? This is the question this competition aims to answer. What transformations could Dubai approach to become a world-leading sustainable city that expresses the local culture as well as its great relationship with a global population? What sort of radical and innovative developments can ensure it is at the forefront of humankind in the next century?

 

We ask designers, architects, engineers, artists, and more to come up with their interpretation of the city of the next century, where humanity can thrive in a sustainable and environmentally conscious manner.

 

What is your vision for Dubai in the 22nd Century?

 

This is an open competition addressed to designers, students and architects. Entries can be submitted as individuals or teams of maximum 4 people.
