INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

YEARNING TO BREATHE 2023
International ‘Biophilic - Urban Residence’ Design Competition
JUL– DEC 2023

Introduction
Welcome to the "Yearning to Breathe" design competition. In this competition, we invite talented designers to create an urban home that embraces the concept of biophilia. Biophilic design seeks to connect people with nature by incorporating natural elements, materials, and patterns into the built environment. Your challenge is to design a residential space that seamlessly integrates biophilic principles and offers residents a harmonious and restorative living experience within an urban context.

Design Objectives:
The primary objective of this competition is to create an urban home that fosters a strong connection with nature while addressing the functional and aesthetic needs of the residents. The design should strive to achieve the following goals:
  1. Biophilic Integration: Develop a design that incorporates biophilic elements to enhance the well-being, comfort, and quality of life of the residents. Integrate natural light, greenery, water features, natural materials, and views of nature into the design.
  2. Sustainability: Emphasize sustainable design practices by utilizing eco-friendly materials, efficient energy systems, and water conservation strategies. Consider incorporating renewable energy sources and passive design techniques to minimize the environmental impact of the home.
  3. Functionality and Comfort: Design a space that provides a functional layout, ample storage, and comfortable living areas. Consider the needs of the residents, such as private spaces, communal areas, and areas for relaxation or hobbies.
  4. Urban Context: Address the challenges of urban living by considering the constraints and opportunities presented by the site. Optimize the use of space, create privacy where necessary, and find innovative ways to maximize natural elements in an urban environment.
  5. Aesthetics: Create a visually appealing design that blends seamlessly with the surrounding urban fabric while showcasing the beauty and richness of nature. Balance modern design aesthetics with the warmth and organic qualities of biophilic elements.

Submission Requirements:
To participate in the competition, you must submit the following:
  1. Design Proposal: Provide detailed plans, sections, and elevations that illustrate the layout, spatial organization, and key design features of the urban home. Highlight the incorporation of biophilic elements and their specific benefits to the residents.
  2. Renderings and Visualizations: Create high-quality 3D renderings, illustrations, or virtual reality representations to convey the ambiance and atmosphere of the proposed design. Use these visuals to showcase the integration of biophilic elements and the overall aesthetic appeal.
  3. Design Explanation: Include a written description that outlines the design concept, the rationale behind your biophilic choices, and how the design addresses the objectives and challenges of the competition.
  4. Sustainability Features: Provide a list of sustainable design features, materials, and systems incorporated into the design, along with an explanation of their environmental benefits.
  5. Site Context: A site plan or analysis that demonstrates how the design responds to the specific characteristics and context of the chosen urban location.
