Wettbewerbsaufgabe

- ein kulturelles Zentrum in den Pagliere;
- den Sitz der Stiftung in der Ala del Mosca, der moderne Arbeitsräume in den oberen Stockwerken beherbergt und die monumentalen und gewölbten Räume im Erdgeschoss aufwertet, in ständiger Beziehung zum städtischen Kontext;
- ein kultureller Mehrzweckraum in der Cavallerizza Alfieriana;
- Räume, die sich zwischen der Welt der Ausbildung und der Arbeit bewegen, flexible Räume für die einzige Doktorandenschule mit Laboratorien, Unterrichtsräumen, Büros, Räumen für die Zusammenarbeit sowie Konferenz- und Seminarräumen im Gardekorps;

Competition assignment
Compagnia di San Paolo, the University of Turin and the City of Turin, in agreement with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, intend to create an international cultural center in the heart of the city of Turin, ensuring the preservation and restoration - in the name of sustainability and with the help of the most advanced technologies – of the compendium of the Cavallerizza Reale, proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Envisaged as a Command Zone of the Savoy government and military operations, the Cavallerizza Reale was conceived starting from the mid-‘600 by Amedeo di Castellamonte as an extension of the Royal Palace compendium. The project, commissioned by Carlo Emanuele II, involved the construction of monumental galleries employed as archives, the establishment of an academy for the children of the Turin and European aristocracy, the royal stables, until 1698 located at the Maneggio Chiablese, the Teatro Regio, the Pagliere building, a library and the State Mint. It is from the first half of the ‚700, with the major renovation works by Filippo Juvarra and Benedetto Alfieri, that Turin acquires a more international dimension, while Bernardo Mosca, responsible for the nineteenth-century extensions, developed a second remodeling of the project, equipping the city with an even more monumental and innovative complex.

In Turin one can breathe a great history: of the Savoy dynasty and the Risorgimento, of a united Italy and its democratic institutions, of labor and rights, of culture and innovation. This is where, in 1706, Prince Eugene defended the country from foreign advances, where in 1848 Carlo Alberto signed the Albertine Statute, where in 1861 the first capital of Italy settled and where, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the country discovered its industrial and manufacturing vocation.

But Turin is more than that: it is a city capable of rising and reinventing itself and is currently experiencing a season of revival on an international scene. Turin is also, among other things, the University of Studies, founded in 1404 and today a prestigious academic reality, and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, founded in 1563 and one of the most relevant philanthropic institutions for heritage and disbursements at European level.

The Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, the University of Turin and the City of Turin considers the unitary project of redevelopment of the Cavallerizza Reale as an opportunity for urban innovation and virtuous dialogue between public and private subjects, with positive repercussions in terms of cultural regeneration and new sociability. The ambition of the competition, also in relation to the secular history of the institutions that put it forward, is to offer Turin an authoritative, iconic and recognizable architectural sign, for it to become a reference point for the cultural and touristic activities across the territory.

This design competition, called „Cavallerizza Reale di Torino“, is organized by Compagnia San Paolo, in implementation of the PUR, Unitary Redevelopment Project, with the aim of realizing:
- a cultural hub in the Pagliere;
- the headquarters of the Foundation in the Ala del Mosca, which hosts modern working spaces on the upper floors and enhances the monumental and vaulted spaces on the ground floor, in constant relationship with the urban context;
- a multi-purpose cultural space in the Cavallerizza Alfieriana;
- spaces pivoting between the world of training and work, flexible spaces for the single doctoral school, with laboratories, teaching rooms, offices, spaces for coworking and conference and seminar rooms in the Guards Corps;
- a system of covered and uncovered public spaces that will have to integrate with all the functions present in the compendium, with the aim of promoting the public use of the entire complex.
