Press release
The architects Lemoal Lemoal have breathed new life into a former municipal technical centre in Cossé-le-Vivien, in the Mayenne department, by transforming it into a space for the social and cultural life of its inhabitants. This space houses the Association Famille Rurale, a music school and multi-purpose spaces.
Located in the town centre, this social and cultural facility is inserted into a continuity of double-gabled buildings whose material qualities attest to a modest form of architecture. Its neighbours are clad in slate, covered with a raked single coating, and sheet metal.
The first goal was to preserve the structural elements in good condition. The concrete block interior walls and the framework were kept. Thus, the project’s layout is largely adapted to the existing spaces.
The new corrugated sheet metal cladding humbly sets the project in its context. The corrugated sheet metal’s patina appearance is a reference to the past occupations of this place. The proportions of its openings trace the old sectional doors of the former technical centre. Particular attention was paid to the framings and the exterior lighting in order to use contrast to underscore the building’s potential to warmly welcome the public.
Inside, the raw materials such as solid chestnut, cotton and concrete are highlighted by reused chandeliers from a Paris mansion.
Our proposal explores ways to breathe new life into the ordinary heritage found in rural areas through the major transformation of a former municipal services workshop into spaces for receiving social life and music and municipal associations.
The meticulous design of the custom-made furniture optimises the spatial qualities of the whole by guaranteeing its unique and welcoming character. The lighting of the ensemble is comprised of reused 19th-century chandeliers salvaged from the selective demolition of the Hôtel d’Iéna in Paris.
The duality of the industrial roughness of the envelope and the precious quality of the wood and the chandeliers creates a warm and singular space. A showcase for social and cultural activities.
