Wettbewerbsaufgabe

ELIAVA BAZAAR Competition
TerraViva launches ELIAVA BAZAAR, a new architecture competition conceived to rethink the unique complex of Eliava Market, located in the heart of Tbilisi (Georgia).
Prizes up to 8.000 € will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed, among others, by Dimitri Shapakidze (Laboratory of Architecture #3), Yasamin Mayyas (WORKac), Isabell Enssle Rios (TSPA) and Juan José Vargas Castillo (TAP).
BRIEF
Nestled within the streets of Tbilisi, Eliava Market stands as a bustling haven, intertwining commerce and culture. Its maze-like paths weave stories of livelihoods, resilience and community bonds. However, recent talks about relocating this iconic market have stirred concerns among its long-time vendors and patrons.
The heart of the matter rests in preserving Eliava’s existing location, a place steeped in the city’s narrative and cherished by generations. Conserving its essence isn’t just about finding a solution to immediate concerns but safeguarding a cornerstone of Tbilisi’s cultural identity.

GUIDELINES
Think about the ways to reimagine the market layout: optimising functionality, improving traffic flows and elevating the overall shopping experience through the exploration of flexible spaces accommodating various activities. Considering user experience as one of the main challenges of Eliava Bazaar competition will be pivotal to the final outcome.
Green spaces and urban integration stand as pivotal aspects, urging participants to integrate pockets of na- ture within the market, contributing if possible to urban biodiversity and offering respites from the viva- cious commercial activities.
To showcase a more nuanced perspective, a smaller-scale focus on the design of individual shops or stalls is encouraged, akin to assembling a mosaic where each small piece contributes to the grand picture.
