Zum ersten Mal in ihrer Geschichte hat die Guggenheim Stiftung einen offenen Wettbewerb für ein neues Guggenheim Museum ausgelobt. Der Standort in Helsinki mit 18.520 m2 liegt direkt am Hafen, umrahmt von Wasser, Park und dem historischen Viertel und ist vom Wasser aus gut sichtbar. Das Museum soll zum Symbol für die Stadt werden und nicht nur international bedeutende Ausstellungen zeigen, sondern sich auf nordische Kunst und Architektur spezialisieren. Es wird mit 500.000 Besuchern pro Jahr gerechnet. Das Raumprogramm für das Museum umfasst 12.100 m2, aufgeteilt in ca. 7.000 m2 zugeordnete Flächen (3.920 m2 flexible Ausstellungsflächen, Mehrzweckzone, Konferenzsaal für 275 Personen, Shop, Café, Restaurant, Büros etc.) und ca. 5.100 m2 nicht zugeordnete Flächen (Verkehrsflächen, Lobbies, Toiletten, Treppen etc.). Auf ca 1.000 m2 soll eine neue Passagierabfertigung entstehen, das das Makasiini Hafenterminal ersetzt und einen freien Platz für das Museum schafft.
Competition assignment
For the first time in its history, the Guggenheim foundation is seeking a design for a museum through an open competition. The site of the new Guggenheim museum in Helsinki with 18.520 m2 is located at the waterfront close to the historic quarter, highly visible from the water. It shall become a symbol of the city and attract 500.000 visitors per year. The program comprises 12.100 m2, including 3.920 m2 flexible exhibition space. On 1.000 m2 a new passenger facility shall re place the Makasiini Port Terminal to create a free site for the museum.

OpenIV.3) Criteria to be applied in the evaluation of projects:Stage one is an open call for participation based on a design submission,which will be evaluated on five key criteria: cityscape, architecture,usability, sustainability, and feasibility.From the stage one entries, the Jury will select six proposals to advanceto stage two of the competition. These firms or individuals will be givenfurther detailed material and invited to a briefing day in Helsinki.
