Der Hverfjall im Norden Islands ist ein Tephrakegel oder „Tuffsteinring“-Vulkan. Der östlich des vulkanischen Sees Mývatn gelegene Explosionskrater ist 1 km breit und etwa 140 Meter tief und ein beliebtes Wanderziel. Viele Teile des Kraters sind über öffentliche Wanderwege leicht zu erreichen, und seine Kämme können bis zu 200 Meter hoch sein.

Der Hverfjall, der vermutlich bei einem Vulkanausbruch entstanden ist, ist - abgesehen von einem Erdrutsch vor einigen Jahren - nahezu perfekt symmetrisch und ist mit seinen dunklen, faszinierenden Farben eine beliebte Touristenattraktion und ein beliebtes Fotomotiv. Das Gelände steht unter Naturschutz, so dass Besucher nur über die beiden genehmigten Wanderwege zum Krater gelangen können, alle anderen Bereiche sind gesperrt.

Im Rahmen des Architekturwettbewerbs Iceland Volcano Lookout Point haben die Teilnehmer die Aufgabe, einen Aussichtspunkt am Nordrand des Kraters zu entwerfen. Die Teilnehmer müssen die funktionalen Eigenschaften dieses Aussichtspunkts berücksichtigen und eine beeindruckende Ästhetik schaffen, die mit der atemberaubenden isländischen Umgebung im Einklang steht. Die Plattform muss eine Grundfläche von 10x10 m haben und von oben einen Blick auf den Mývatn-See und die Dimmuborgir-Lavafelder bieten.

Die isländische Landschaft ist voller kühner Kontraste, faszinierender Formen und tiefdunkler Farben. Die Teilnehmer können sich also von einer wirklich einzigartigen Umgebung inspirieren lassen, um ein Bauwerk zu schaffen, das der visuellen Anziehungskraft eines durch eine Vulkanexplosion entstandenen Kraters von 1 km Breite entspricht.

Competition assignment
Hverfjall in northern Iceland is a tephra cone or “tuff ring” volcano. Located to the east of the volcanic Lake Mývatn, the volcanic explosion crater is 1 km wide and roughly 140 meters deep, and is a popular hiking destination. Visitors can easily access many parts of the crater via public hiking trails, where its ridges can reach up to 200 meters in height.

Believed to have been created during a volcano eruption, Hverfjall is almost perfectly symmetrical, apart from a landslide that took place several years ago, and its dark, captivating colours make it a popular tourist attraction and photography spot. The site is protected, so visitors can only use the two approved hiking trails to access the crater, with all other areas restricted.

For the Iceland Volcano Lookout Point architecture competition, participants are tasked with designing an observation point positioned on the northern edge of the crater. Participants will need to consider the functional properties of this observation point and produce an impressive aesthetic that’s in keeping with the stunning Icelandic surroundings. The platform will need to fit a 10x10 m base, offering a view from the top overlooking Lake Mývatn and the Dimmuborgir Lava fields.

The Icelandic landscape is full of bold contrasts, intriguing shapes, and deep dark colours, and so participants are free to take inspiration from a truly unique environment to create a structure that matches the visual appeal of a 1 km-wide crater formed by a volcanic explosion.
