A new kinetic, dynamic façade enhances a historic cistern in Cornella, Barcelona.
Designed by CREAM Estudio
A new skin for an old cistern, designed by Spanish architects Cream Estudio.
This project aims to give new vitality to the building has supplied the metropolis of Barcelona with water since 1909. Located within an urban park, the new façade intends to integrate the water tank with the rest of the park and landscape.
The sheer size of the building, an imposing 8 x 100 meters, made a more interactive dynamic façade possible. The result is a kinetic surface that interacts with the natural elements around it, namely wind and light.
This kinetic skin is an active system that moves with the simple current of the wind. The effect that occurs is that of a ripple, a completely organic everchanging surface.
The façade is made out of 40,000 brushed aluminium shingles that each move individually with the flow of air to create the iconic fluid movement over the entire surface. The idea was to create a living skin that simulates the movement of water and simultaneously makes a strong impression on visitors of the park.
In the evenings, the addition of light makes for a spectacular show.
Skin, light, and water were the three elements created the starting point of the façade. By combining the fluidity of water with the depth of light and the texture of a skin, an engaging surface emerged.
The entire construction is suspended one meter from the wall of the water tank, allowing for maximum airflow and thus movement. Each aluminium shingle moves independently, and together, the skin physicalizes the shape of the wind blowing upon it.
