Introduction
Archiol has organized this second edition of the Sunlight in Architecture design competition to understand the importance of sunlight as a building material in architectural design.
“I sense Light as the giver of all presences, and material as spent Light. What is made by Light casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light.”
– Louis Kahn
Sunlight is integral to the design of a building, it brings added value. Sunlight also known as natural light plays an important role in the comfort, health, and mood of the human, but it varies depending on where we are.
Natural lighting has been proven to increase health and comfort levels for building occupants. If architects fail to understand how daylight works, they could run the risk of failing the building occupants. Introducing daylight into the building is not as simple as it seems. An architect should be wise enough to know how to design to introduce the right amount of daylight, its intensity, distribution, and penetration and should be able to incorporate it in the building.
“More and more, so it seems to me, light is the beautifier of the building.”
– Frank Lloyd Wright
Purpose:
This competition aims to understand the importance of sunlight as a building material in architectural design.

“Light is of decisive importance in experiencing architecture. The same room can be made to give very different spacial impressions by the simple expedient of changing the size and location of its openings.”
