Willkommen beim The Legendary Highway 14 Tower Designwettbewerb, einer architektonischen Herausforderung, angesiedelt in der malerischen ländlichen Gemeinde von De Smet, South Dakota, USA. Die Teilnehmer sind aufgerufen, einen ikonischen Aussichtsturm und begleitende Landschaftselemente zu entwerfen, die die reiche Geschichte und natürliche Schönheit der Region hervorheben. Das Projekt soll das Besuchererlebnis verbessern und den Tourismus in der Glacial Lakes Region und im Bundesstaat South Dakota fördern.
Das Wettbewerbsgelände liegt am Nordrand des Big Slough, der in den Silver Lake übergeht, und bietet einen idealen Aussichtspunkt, um die historischen natürlichen Gegebenheiten der Region zu beobachten. Welcome to The Legendary Highway 14 Tower Design Competition, an architectural challenge set in the picturesque rural community of De Smet, South Dakota, USA. Participants are invited to design an iconic observation tower and accompanying landscape elements that highlight the region's rich history and natural beauty. This project aims to enhance the visitor experience and boost tourism in the Glacial Lakes Region and the state of South Dakota.
The competition site, located at the north edge of the Big Slough transitioning to Silver Lake, offers an ideal vantage point for observing the area's historic natural features. Participants are tasked with creating a cohesive design solution that focuses on user experience, incorporating movement, observation, and contemplation of the Silver Lake and Big Slough ecosystem. Emphasis should be placed on accessibility, safety, sustainability, and promoting local, regional, and statewide tourism.
The Legendary Highway 14 Tower Design Competition offers architects and designers a unique opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of the Legendary Highway 14 Tower Trail project. The winning design will not only enhance the visitor experience but also serve as an enduring symbol of collaboration and innovation in rural communities. As winning designs will be put forward for consideration for construction, this competition presents a remarkable chance for participants to leave a lasting impact on the landscape of South Dakota.

Xuanru Chen is a lead architect at Shanghai-based ZJJZ Atelier;
Tue Foged is an architect and founding partner of the Copenhagen-based architecture studio EFFEKT;
Anne Cecilie Haug is the director of staffing, senior architect, and member of the research and innovation team at the Oslo office of Snøhetta;
Kyle Lee is Kingsbury County Commissioner and involved in community projects in De Smedt, South Dakota;
Euan Millar is co-founder and director of Icosis Architects, a Scottish design practice specializing in bespoke buildings using natural sustainable materials often set within remote landscapes and locations;
Rok Oman co-founded OFIS architects in 1996 where runs a team is based in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Paris, France while also teaching at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design;
Tom Schroeder is a senior architect with Patkau Architects and a guest critic / adjunct faculty at the University of British Columbia;
Jan Vondrák Is a cofounder of the renowned Czech studio Mjölk and a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at TUL in Liberec

Eligibility
Competition is open to all. No professional qualification is required.
Design proposals can be developed individually or by teams (4 team members maximum).
Correspondence with organizers must be conducted in English;
All information submitted by participants must be in English.
